Drawing of Anemone flower

FFS is a weekly how-to draw series where we will focus on just one item to draw. A lot of people feel they can’t draw, or have tried and fail because they look at the big picture instead of breaking it down into smaller pieces. Everything we see is made up of shapes and lines. If you break it down into it’s parts, sketching becomes easier. These are not meant to be highly detailed drawings, sketches are more loose interpretations of the object you are trying to depict. As long as you can tell what it is, you’ve succeeded.

By focusing on only one object, we can practice drawing it over and over, fill a whole page with sketches. Drawing is muscle memory. If we train the muscles, eventually it will get easier to look at a reference image or object and draw without needing to see the steps in a tutorial.

I chose an Anemone for our first tutorial in the series. It might look complicated but it’s made up of some circles and lines. That’s it. And the best part about drawing flowers, they’re open to interpretation. You can even make up your own and they will still look great. When beginning the sketch, make sure to keep your pencil pressure very light. We will be going over lines and will eventually erase the guidelines, and the pencil sketch if you decide to go over it with a fineliner or pen.

Start with the circle for the stamen (inner circle) add a larger circle around it as a guide for the petals of the flower. Add some stippling (use your pencil to make dots around the perimeter of the stamen), add little upside down u shapes around the stamen, add the inner petals with a curved line at the top to show the petal curl, add the outer petals and curved lines. For the vines and leaves, draw an S shape curve, add some flowy leaves. Add lines to the petals in the making sure to follow the direction the petal is extending outward from the stamen. Add some lines to the leaves and voila! You have drawn an Anemone! You can erase the initial circle guide or trace over the entire drawing with a fineliner or pen and then erase any pencil marks still showing.

I hope you will give the Anemone a try. If there are any objects you would like to see a tutorial on, let me know and I will do my best to make it happen.
